Sunny Design Pro from SMA Enables System Planning Across All Energy Sectors

System planners can now for the first time ever plan and simulate energy systems across all sectors. The new version of the Sunny Design Pro system design software, which SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) unveiled at Intersolar Europe in Munich, takes into account not only electrical power generators and loads but also battery storage systems and thermal components such as CHP plants and heat pumps. Sunny Design Pro instantly creates a comprehensive system overview containing all of the energy-related and economical key figures. System planners, solar power professionals and energy consultants can provide their customers with a sound decision-making basis and give valid forecasts of the planned energy system’s efficiency.

“With Sunny Design Pro, SMA is the first manufacturer to develop software for efficient integrated energy planning especially in commercial applications,” said Dr. Thomas Straub, Senior Product Manager at SMA, who is responsible for the new Sunny Design Pro. “On the one hand, the strength of this program is that it provides a comprehensive overview of the electrical and thermal aspects of the energy systems and prepares the results according to the needs of customers. On the other hand, the energy flows can be optimized through the integrated functions of our energy management platform ennexOS. This helps operators make considerable cost savings.”

Comprehensive documentation for complete systems
The individual sectors of an energy system always had to be planned and calculated separately. It took considerable time and effort to merge the individual results. Now, for the first time ever, Sunny Design Pro maps the entire system and factors in all energy generators and loads. System planners receive comprehensive project documentation of the planned overall system and can therefore offer their customers a sound decision-making basis.

In addition to planning energy systems with integrated energy, system planners can use the new Sunny Design Pro to design grid-connected, off-grid and PV hybrid systems, store and manage projects and create their own modules, locations and load profiles. Sunny Design Pro also allows you to flexibly manage purchasing and feed-in tariffs, create consumption and load profile analyses and simulate the use of battery storage systems, including in peak load shaving applications.

New SMA Energy Management Platform ennexOS Successfully Tested at the EEBUS Initiative E-Mobility Plugfest

To coordinate the environmentally friendly and cost-saving aspects of energy consumption with each other, all electrical devices in modern energy networks must speak the same language. The foundation for this is formed by the pan-manufacturer EEBUS initiative. This has been set up by leading European manufacturers from the fields of smart home, domestic technology, e-mobility and energy to develop a common energy language, using the EEBUS standard. The new energy management platform ennexOS from SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) has already mastered the EEBUS standard. This platform will combine all of a system’s energy generators, consumers and storage systems and allow them to be controlled optimally. Proof that this also has application in the e-mobility sector was provided by the new platform ennexOS at the first e-mobility Plugfest of the EEBUS initiative in Cologne.

Representatives from SMA; the VDE Association for Electrical Electronic and Information Technologies; the VDA Automobile Industry Association members Porsche and Audi; the manufacturer for heating and cooling systems Viessmann; and the provider of electrical and smart-home solutions Hager, met at the first e-mobility Plugfest for live tests of the uniform device communication. “The uniform EEBUS standard makes a decisive contribution to using energy efficiently and thus saving costs,” said Frank Blessing, Senior Business Development Manager Energy Services at SMA and, since May, a new member on the Managing Board of the EEBUS initiative. “This was proven in tests conducted at the e-mobility Plugfest and at HVAC Plugfest in May in Munich, where the entire communication between heating, smart home systems and energy managers was put to the acid test in the presence of representatives from the heating industry, such as Vaillant. With the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 and the SMA Data Manager M, SMA proves that solutions for connecting the electricity, heat and transport sectors are already on the market. The standardized integration of electric vehicles into energy management is a major success in the promotion and acceptance of e-mobility and a decisive step towards an all-electric society.”

Successful tests to ensure grid stability and optimize self-consumption
Promoting electric vehicles and the necessary integration into existing grid infrastructures has led to major challenges in terms of safeguarding grid stability. Today’s grid and domestic grid structures are not, for example, designed to simultaneously charge a large number of electric vehicles without intelligent coordination. It is precisely this intelligent coordination that SMA energy management takes over. It also offers the end customer true added value. Locally generated solar power is used as efficiently as possible, taking the electric vehicle and other loads into consideration, without sacrificing convenience for the end customer.

About EEBUS
EEBUS Initiative e.V. is an independent association with over 60 members—mainly leading European manufacturers from the fields of smart home, networked domestic technology, automobile industry and energy. Together with its members, this association develops the open EEBUS standard—the global language of energy in the internet of things. Thanks to this standard, devices and systems can communicate with each other about the efficient use of energy, regardless of their manufacturer. All specifications that are developed are standardized internationally and are freely accessible.

SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) is the global leader in providing monitoring and energy management solutions for residential PV systems. This has now been confirmed by a study by the U.S. analyst company Navigant Research. For its report on “Residential Solar Monitoring and HEMS,” Navigant examined the strategy and execution of 15 leading providers of monitoring and energy management solutions. SMA came out ahead of its competitors in the study.

“Without intelligent energy management, the enormous potential of photovoltaics cannot be exploited,” explained SMA CEO Pierre-Pascal Urbon. “SMA invested in software developments at an early stage and has already connected more than a quarter of a million PV systems worldwide with our Sunny Portal.” With our Sunny Home Manager 2.0, private operators of small to medium-sized PV systems can already optimize their system and use even more solar power for their own consumption. At the end of the year, our new energy management platform ennexOS will provide commercial customers with the opportunity to connect PV systems with air conditioning and storage systems, for example, in order to use as much solar power as possible directly at the production location. In this context, we are of course delighted that the performance of our energy management solutions has also been recognized by Navigant Research in its recent study.”

The following criteria were included in Navigant Research’s analysis of the 15 leading providers of monitoring and energy management systems: vision; go-to market strategy; partners; technology; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; product performance; product portfolio and ecosystem; and staying power. A summary of the results is available on the Internet at https://www.navigantresearch.com/research/navigant-research-leaderboard-residential-solar-monitoring-and-hems.
